What a TRIS notification is
A TRIS notification is the draft technical rule a member state must submit to the Commission, then hold back, before adopting it.
The European mechanism that makes national technical rules visible before they are adopted.
In detail
Before adopting a national technical rule, on a product, a digital service, a labelling standard or a composition requirement, a member state must notify it to the Commission. A period then opens during which it cannot adopt the rule, and during which the Commission and the other member states can react.
Why it concerns you
This mechanism shows you a national regulation before it exists, including in a country where you have no monitoring in place. For a company that sells in several member states, a TRIS notification is often the first warning of a constraint to come.
And on a French file, it is the reverse that is useful: seeing that another state has notified a comparable measure, and reading what the Commission said about it.
